Macklemore & Ryan Lewis
My first-ever time listening to a Macklemore and Ryan Lewis song was captivating. It started playing, and I thought it was a joke. Something about a thrift shop, all I could imagine was a parody. I decided to look up more Macklemore and Ryan Lewis, and I instantly fell in love (no cliché there at all). Macklemore is a white rapper, which by itself is outgoing enough, because in the world of Hip Hop, unless your name is a best-selling chocolate candy and you were raised in a trailer park, there isn't much room for success. Macklemore raps about realistic problems. His song "Wing$", about how the industry of Nike has controlled so many people and their tendencies to stick be on top of the fashion trends struck a chord, but his big-time opener is "Same Love", in which he argues the equality of same-sex couples, and how they're still discriminated against today. Of course, he still has some funny songs, like the well-known "Thrift Shop", but even then he sneaks in messages through lyrics such as "One mans trash, that's another mans come up", and "Fifty dollars for a t-shirt, that's just some ignorant b**** s***, I call that getting swindled and pimped, s***,I call that getting tricked by a business".
